It’s Christmastime! What do you know, as soon as finals are over another kind of stress comes around (thank goodness, I passed all my classes with OK grades) and it is a time to be busy busy busy. Although, I will admit I haven’t been doing all that much since being home because of continuing motivational issues I’ve had all semester. A small exception to that has been the duty of sending a Christmas card from my dolls to other dolls through a Den of Angels xmas card exchange.
While Rye’s “secret santa” receiver is a tiny Puki who likes candy, all we know about Senna’s recipient is that he is a DZ Floy SD and his owner likes camping. Alas, we decided that we should make a sleeping bag for him.

Here pictured are Rye (70 cm, 28″) and Senna (60 cm, 24″) and you can see that 45″ fabric is perfectly suitable for the 60 cm doll along the crosswise grain. If I were to try to construct Rye his own sleeping bag… ehhh, that would be a very different, and bigger, story.

I first cut a half yard of quilted cotton which ended up being perfectly sized to encase Senna in.

I also cut half yard x 22″ pieces each of the lining and outer fabrics.

I first basted the fabrics to the quilted cotton along the edges, then sewed on those horizontal straight lines you commonly see patterning sleeping bags:

I then sewed the top and bottom edges of the casing, right sides together, and added the little elastic rings to the bottom (that allow you to keep the sleeping bag rolled).

The next and most mentally challenging step was sewing the bottom edge of the sleeping bag:

Finally, the zipper was added and I used a 22″ one, the longest type available at the sewing store.

Woo! Sleeping bag complete =)

We also made a little pillow of fleece to match – nothing complicated.

Double layered padding makes it warm~

Wouldn’t you rather be sleeping comfortably if you were a doll? Buy one from my store here! ^___^

Changing BJD eyes is not as easy as you might think.

Purple acrylic vs. green double dome Soom silicone eyes
As you may know, most ball-jointed dolls come with removable eyes which you can position using putty*. This is a nice feature for when you want to change the color or position of the eyes, but getting the two sides to match up is the really challenging part. But let’s start from the beginning. How do you know what kind of eyes to buy? This is a debated topic which comes down to personal choice, but there are significant differences to be aware of.
*the putty I used came with my doll, and was very sticky and messy and I had to use dish soap to wash it off.
Eye Composition – What should I get?
Not only is there the color choice for eyes, but there’s also the *make*. This makes a BIG difference in appearance. For one, there is the material used– glass and urethane eyes are known for being the highest quality which best refract light for depth and brightness. But with their material, they are also the most expensive. Ethereal Angels, otherwise known as Gumdrops or Eye candy, are one of the most well-known brands for their amazing urethane eyes. Keep in mind that as of October 2009, they are not taking orders and are only selling out of a narrow stock so chances are slim that you’ll be able to buy exactly what you want right now. See ordering/availability details on their post.
Next up are silicone eyes, made of a softer material that won’t scratch as easily, and Soom has a huge selection of these. This is currently what I have in my dolls.

And lastly, I’d rank acrylic eyes quality-wise. They can have some pretty awesome-looking designs on the internet, but in real life they tend to be dark unless a flash is used or there is bright lighting around. Souldoll and Safrin doll sell a giant variety of these. They are also cheaper.

What size?
Yesterday in Stagecraft, I whipped up a BJD-sized “sofa.” Compared to my earlier BJD chair attempt with chopsticks, this one took me a fraction of the time and is a billion times sturdier! XD

It was challenging to come up with what I was going to make AND make it in just an hour and a half. Nicely enough, the theater woodshop had great power tools like a staple gun, band saw, miter saw, and belt sander to get it done quickly and without splinters =)

On a whim with a tiny doll chair for inspiration, I decided to try to construct a piece of furniture appropriately sized to fit my SD BJD. I don’t have any experience in woodworking or metal construction, and my dad said a project like that would take too long since I only have a few more days at home. So with a bit of recycled cardboard and twelve sets of chopsticks…

And acrylic paint, black fabric, and a hot glue gun, I successfully made something like a BJD chair! XD

^_____^ it probably took me about 5 hours to complete.
Test subject trial:

Senna: This is nice, a chair I can finally fit in! =]
(she couldn’t fit the old chair: )

^___^ I think it fits.
Me: umm… sort of….. =/ *chair bends and CRACK*

?!!?
wtf?? -___-;;; you made me a chair out of chopsticks and expected it to hold? I weigh five pounds, not two and a half =(
=( it was really makeshift, I don’t think the hot glue holds well… t___t
=/ It’s okay, it’s actually great. I just weigh a lot. I’m sorry, I can put it back together.

Nah, I probably shoulda just used rubber cement at least and more chopsticks. Don’t worry about it.

^___^;;; yeah umm… this came off…. let’s forget about a chair for me.
How about we stick to the old one? If we had a Tiny I think this chair would work for her. =)

=) Speaking of tinies, let me show you some of the dolls I’ve been considering….

This weekend I visited my family in Oahu and bought lots of awesome accessories for my beloved BJD! Since I didn’t bring her with me I could only hope that they would fit. =/
We spent three hours yesterday at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet (hawaii’s biggest) and my cousin and I bought lots of cool things:

Including a `ukulele ![]()

The funny thing about the word “ukulele” is that it means “jumping flea.” lol.

New Friends

I was really happy to find this medium-sized Totoro at the swap meet for just $7. Quite a steal, considering Toys n’ Joys, my favorite import store, would probably have sold it for at least $25. I did buy a smaller Totoro on a log keychain for $4 from them.
The girl needed some friends!

Hawaiian Senna

I gave her a new lei ($2), plumeria barette ($1), purse ($1) and toe ring-made Hawaiian bracelets ($8):

Look how stretched out those toe rings are! Your wrists are really big, Senna……
Well they have to be, to fit my hands! But the bracelets look nice. Thank you! =)
You’re welcome!

And she was super stoked to finally get a toothbrush and some toothpaste, along with other foody goodies =)

Ooh, a toothbrush…

Yep, toothpaste to brighten your smile along with these sugary foods XD
Wow! Hmm… I wonder what kind of a dentist you’ll make ^__-

She looks pretty with her $5 barrette from the Art Box store in Ward Warehouse. A little more oriental… maybe I should have gotten her two!
